Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Open heart surgery is done directly on the heart by opening the chest. During this surgery, the beating of the heart is temporarily stopped and a bypass machine is attached to pump blood and oxygen to the heart, for that time the machine will work as an artificial heart. However, these days beating heart bypass surgery is performed while the heart is still beating. This surgery is no doubt a major surgery and always concerning. However, most of them are very successful and effective.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
