How To Manage High GGT Levels?

Hello Dr. My husband has high GGT level and has been asked to lower it below 60 and maintain it. The last test was above 70. He has been a heavy drinker always, but still thinks he just needs to cut down to drinking wine in the weekend about 3 glasses and that will be enough instead of complete abstenance. Please advsie is that enough to reduce GGT below 60 and maintain it ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for posting your query.
I appreciate your concern for your husband.

In addition to causing liver damage alcohol consumption can affect almost all the organs including brain, heart, pancreas, and the testicles.
The liver damage can result in cirrhosis, liver cell failure or cancer.

So, in view of the toxic potential of alcohol, there should be total abstinence in reversing the liver injury and restoring the normal GGT level.

In addition to total abstinence from alcohol, he must avoid taking certain drugs like Acetaminophen, oily foods, etc.
His diet should be healthy rich in vitamins like green vegetables, fruits, etc.
He may take Vitamin E containing supplements to prevent further liver damage.

Hope this answers your query.
