How To Get Rid Of Pain From Chicken Pox Blisters?

Is there any sort of medication that can relieve pain from chicken pox blisters (paracetamol / mefenamic acid / something else?) ??
My girlfriend is suffering from one and is currently sleep-depraved because of the itch and the pain from the blisters, mainly because most of the blisters are located on her back and chest.
I've read online that benadryl could help with the itch and also help sleep, is it recommended though?
Thanks in advance, Doctor.

Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

Chicken pox blisters usually don't pain. There might be an itching sensation when they begin to dry up. Pain in the blisters might be because of secondary bacterial infection.

If that is the case, then it is advisable to take an oral antibiotic as well (penicillin group e.g Amoxycillin for a week) along with oral antivirals like acyclovir.

An oral antihistamine like either benadryl or cetrizine can be taken for symptomatic itch relief.

A topical soothing lotion e.g calamine can be applied as soon as the lesions begin to dry up to sooth the itch and discomfort.
