Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had hip surgery 6 weeks ago and doing fine with that. My problem is I went off the pain medicine, because I did not need it, as I have had no pain. Now is am fighting anxiety and depression. What is the best way to get off the pain medicine, so this does not happen to us?
Pain medications (usually opioids) cause a phenemenon called as dependence. The pain might have subsided but your body will be adjusted to the medications. At this juncture, abruptly stopping medications cause withdrawal symptoms. In your case, the description of anxiety and low mood aptly fits as withdrawal symptoms. Now, to avoid these withdrawal symptoms, the best thing to do is to taper down the dose of drugs over days or weeks or months (depending upon the dose) and gradually stopping it. Hope this helps. Thanks.
