How To Determine Disc Space Infection Or Spinal Cord Tumour?

Severe neck pain for 4 weeks. Orthopedist read MRI findings. Results, supposedly could be 1. Disc space infection or 2. spinal cord tumor. I was referred to a spinal cord specialist. Will he be able to confirm which it is? Are there any other tests that will result in a definitive answer.

Hi,

It will not be hard to determine the difference between a MASS LESION or an infection since there are several diagnostic studies such as PET SCAN, ULTRASOUND, and finally FINE NEEDLE BIOPSY that can all help differentiate between those 2 entities. Also, blood tests can help when looking at high white blood cells and/or the presence of fever etc.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dariush Saghafi, Neurologist
