How To Cure The Condition Of Gastroenteritis?

My son came down with gastroenteritis in Jan. 2014. He vomited, had diarrhea, body aches etc for approximately five days. I know this was a viral illness as the rest of the family became I ll as well. At the end of Feb he again had vomiting and diarrhea for a few days along with moderate to severe stomach pain. I assumed it was the flu again. Approximately 2-3 weeks later in March he became I ll again. Moderate to severe stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting. I took him to convenient care. They stated it could be gastroenteritis again or possibly a food allergy advised I keep him out of school the next day and return if it wasn t better in two days. 3 days later he returned from school complaining of stomach pain and vomited all over my parents back yard. Diarrhea followed. We returned to convenient care where they tested his blood and did a stool culture. All normal. The symptoms once again went away. One month later I was notified by email he was laying down in the office for severe headache. He began vomiting and vomited for 5-10 minutes. Returning home he complained of head and stomach pain. Blood sugar tested at 6 &8 hours after his last meal was approx. 125. He is not diabetic. He vomited later in the evening only bile. Fasting blood sugar normal at 75 yesterday morning. He complained at that time of head pain and feeling light headed. I gave him toast and applesauce and fluids. Early this morning g around 2 am I heard him whimpering and talking in his sleep. He had a 102 ° fever and stated his head hurt. I gave him ibuprofen and fever resolved. Head still hurts at this time, although less than before. He is acting a bit more normal. Other complaints some neck stiffness and leg stiffness. He also has complained of blurry vision off and on for months. Tested by 2 doctors and no need for glasses. His pediatrician suggested keeping a food and activity diary to check for food allergy. As this is an ongoing problem and has resulted in 7 missed days of school since Feb. What other tests would you suggest? He is currently taking culturelle. He bathes obsessively as many as six times or more a day during the bouts of illness and says that sometimes makes his symptoms better but not always. What could this be?

Hello,
I can understand your concern for your son's health.
1) Gastro-enteritis is not a viral infection. It is inflammation to stomach and small bowel due to either irritation or allergy from particular food (food poisoning). Therefore all family members developed it simultaneously.
2) I am suspecting severe gastritis due to H. Pylori infection based on recurrent symptoms.
3) He might require upper GI endoscopy, USG abdomen, Tests to rule out H. Pylori infection.
4) For him diagnosis is important as he is taking treatment just to control his symptoms which occur regularly. But treatment to cure disease can only be started once disease is diagnosed.

Hope I answered your query. If you have any further query, I would be happy to help you.
Have a nice day!
