How To Control Rise In Potassium Levels?

Have a coworker who is on dialysis. His potassium level is slightly elevated. I prepare his food twice a day, 5 days a week. How do I lower his potassium level? I try not to prepare anything that has potassium in it, I read all food labels so that I can avoid these products. Are there any over the counter medications he can take to help lower his potassium?

Hello,

The following are treatment options for increased potassium levels:
1) Dietary modifications
2) Diuretics for patients who are not on dialysis
3) Hemodialysis in chronic kidney disease patients
4) Gastrointestinal cation exchangers like Patiromer and Sodium zicronium cyclosilicate
5) In emergency cases and in severely high potassium levels, calcium, Insulin with glucose are given

Foods containing potassium and are to be avoided are bananas, oranges, cantaloupes, honeydew, apricots, grapefruit and some dried fruits like dates and raisins. Others with potassium are cooked spinach, cooked broccoli, potatoes, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, peas, cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins and leafy greens. As he is on Hemodialysis, you don't need to worry as potassium Is removed by dialysis.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
