How To Confirm Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome?

I have recently stopped drinking. I am an alcoholic who has experienced sobriety before (13 yr) but its been a while. Today is my 15th day. Detox was e3xtremely uncomfortable and was achieved at home with the help of a friend. EDxtreme tremors, body temp issues, nightmares and very poor spleep for the first week. Now I ve had 2 nights where I was awake all night. I m atttending meeting, do not wish to drink but am not very nice to be around...Is this PAWS? are there things I can be doiing to improve my demeanor? I m also very sensitive to any criticism

Psychiatrist 's  Response
hi dear,
to confirm post acute withdrawal syndrome you have to consult psychiatrist.
first detail history and mental status examination is necessary..
what ever you describe symptoms is suggestive of alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
there are many medication to control withdrawal features like benzodiazepins like lorazepam, clonazepam, cholrdiazepoxide, etc...
there are anti craving drugs like acamprosate, topiramate etc..
not to worry much.
Thank you

Addiction Medicine Specialist Dr. Dr. Matt Wachsman's  Response
Yes, you had acute withdrawal. There are several different withdrawal syndromes. There is the very serious one that lasts for up to several days in the first week of withdrawal (this is past that period) and then there are the chronic effects of long term drinking that can last a long time. Medication (NOT addictive ones like alcohol, valium, xanax, clonazepam, etc) can be somewhat helpful for the symptoms (CLONIDINE... not klonapin) but mainly meetings, etc.
best of luck!
