How To Clean Nipple Before Breastfeeding?

i am currently pregnant. this is my second pregnancy. towards the beginning of the pregnancy, i had some leakage in my nipples and it has just hardened and created crusty hard gunk on my nipples. do i need to try to clean it before i start to breastfeed again? how do i clean it if so? i dont want to make my nipples bleed. but i also dont want to choke my baby the first time she nurses.
