How should the Levulan PDT administered to treat Actinic keratosis?

I had the Levulon/blue light PDT done yesterday. I am now looking up the info and see that the light is to be done 14-18 hrs following application of the medication. However, the office where I had it done applied the med and put me in the light after 1 hour. Is this another approach to treating acinic keratosis and is this an acceptable timetable for the product?

Hello and welcome to HCM,

There are many protocols of time gap to be given between ALA and PDT ranging from 30 mins to 16 hours. There are pros and cons to both ends. More you let the ALA sit on your skin before PDT, more chances of side effects like edema and inflammation. Though you may need more sittings with the shorter durations.

Being trained under some of the most experienced dermatologists, I have seen them waiting 1/2 to 2 hours after applying levulan before giving PDT . Your skin must have been pretreated with topical tretinoin to enhance the penetration of the product.

Dont worry you are in right hands and underwent the right protocol.
Avoid sun, expect peeling, avoid putting makeup on your skin, take oral anti inflammatory like ibuprofen or paracetamol in case of pain and redness.

Hope I helped
