Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I am 52 yr old married housewife. I have chronic depression due to chemical imbalance and I have been on medication since more than 7 years now. I had been prescribed Amitone plus along with Pexcep CR and Ativan a yr ago. I have been addicted to these medicines and cannot sleep at night without them. How should I get rid of my addiction?
You have chronic depression since last 7 years and are taking Amitryptiline, Paroxetine and Lorazepam. First of all I would like to tell you that if taken properly under prescription then these medicines are not addicting. Though Lorazepam carry abuse potential but even this drug can be prescribed for long periods. Treatment of depression runs a longer course and need medicines for long. If your are having symptom remission and your psychiatrist agrees to stop medicines then the medicines can be stopped without fear.
Abrupt stoppage of medicines is not advisable. Instead gradual tapering of doses of drug by 20-25% every two weeks is advised followed by complete stoppage at end of 6-10 weeks. In this method withdrawal syndrome doesnt occur. You can discuss with your psychiatrist for details.
Thanks, hope this helps you
