How Should Flecainide Be Taken For The Treatment Of Atrial Fibrillation?

I was given flecainide for recent onset of atrial flutter/fib when several weeks of Toprol did not work. I had a nuclear stress test last summer which was normal. In the last 36 hours, my pulse has been a constant 130-140 but no irregularity noted. I am going to call my doctor in the morning, but wondered if I should take my regular bedtime dose.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Flecainide is known as an anti-arrhythmic drug. It works by blocking certain electrical signals in the heart that can cause an irregular heartbeat. This medication is taken by mouth with or without food, usually twice daily or as directed by your doctor.

Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same times each day. You may need to take Flecainide for a few more days for your heart rate to decrease more at around normal levels.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Prabhash Verma,
