How Safe Is Giving Lantus With The Sugar Level Of Around 80?

I have a daughter that has juvenile diabetes type 1. Her range is 80-150. We have been able to keep her levels in her range without giving any insulin. The Dr. has stated she needs to be given lantus every night however her levels at night are in the 80 s so I don t give the lantus and without it her levels remain fine. When her mother has her she gives it to her regardless of what her level is. My question is, is it harmful to my daughter for me not to give the lantus? I just don t feel she needs this, we are not having to give any insulin at all other than the lantus at night which I don t feel is necessary.

Diabetologist 's  Response
Hi, I had gone through your query and understood your concerns.
Lantus is type of insulin which works for 24hrs and having very little incidence of low sugars.
in type 1 diabetes especially in first year of treatment there will a condition called Honeymoon phase it means there will be transient improvement in beta cells, once you started treating sugars.
during this phase sugars will be normal in spite of not taking insulin.
In this phase we need to follow up very closely.
if fasting sugars are fine there is no need to give lantus. its very difficult to predict about duration of this Honeymoon phase.
So you should be monitoring the kid daily for fasting and after lunch blood sugars. We need to consider starting insulin is sugars starts coming above 180 after taking food.
feel free to write back to me for further information
