How Long Will It Take For Side Effects Of Allopurinol To Fade Away?
I just came home from the hospital after having an adverse reaction to Allopurinol. I was taking the drug in conjunction with my chemo treatment of CLL. I am covered in hives and my face has swollen to twice its size. I am also blistered and peeling. I am no longer taking the Allopurinol. How long until the symptoms go away?
The half life of a drug is the time it takes for the amount of a particular drug in the body to decrease by half. It can take 3 to 5 half lives for a medication to be completely eliminated.
The half life of allopurinol is 1 to 2 hours, this means, that in most persons, most of this medication is eliminated in 3 to 10 hours though some of the effects would persist longer.
In general, most effects resolve within 3 to 5 days of discontinuation of the medication.
If they persist beyond this time then your doctors may need to continue the medications that you are using to decrease the reactions and may also suggest additional medications.
I hope this helps
