How Long Will I Have To Wait To Get Negative UPT Post Medical Abortion?

At 5 weeks pregnant can abortion be complete after taking Misoprostol if heavy bleeding (10 maxi pads soaked, along with large blood clots) occurs for about 5 hours and then stops.? How long will I have to wait to have an accurate blood or urine test? And which would you reccomend?

Dear Madam,

You seem to have quite a heavy bleeding after Misoprostol termination of pregnancy. It is likely that you may not have aborted completely.

Two tests can help you in assessing the completeness of termination of pregnancy.
1. Urine pregnancy test (UPT): It requires 7-10 days for the pregnancy test to become negative after an abortion. So I would not advise you to depend on this test.
2. Ultrasonography will immediately reveal whether you have aborted completely or not.

With heavy bleeding you had, I would strongly recommend you to get the ultrasonography done to find the status of the pregnancy and abortion.

Please also have a follow up visit to your Obstetrician ASAP.
