How Long Should One Take Ciprofloxacin For Perforated Eardrum After A Head Trauma?

Hi. We are in the process of changing doctors because of new insurance on Jan. 1. My husband fell, with head trauma, a week ago and was in the hospital for 3 days. Our previous doctor was approved by the insurance company because it was an emergency. He ordered Ciprofloxicin ear drops for a perforated eardrum occurring as a result of the fall. We are on the 8th day of that treatment. How many more days should I keep giving him the eardrops. They did not tell me at the hospital. (I am in the process of setting up a doctor s appt. with a new doctor.) I know antibiotics are usually given for 10 days. Should I quit them on the 10th day? There is no infection; they are preventative.

Hello,

First of all thanks for trusting for your health question with us.

i understand your confusion regarding usage of antibiotics i.e.Ciprofloxacin drops.

After Trauma there are chances of infection so usually whether the infection is present or not,we doctors give antibiotics to prevent infection or to control spread of infection. The course of oral antibiotics is usually 5 days to 7 days. For drops or topical application usage of it is given according to recovery expectation.

Since you have mentioned that your doctor is going to be changed because of insurance changes, you can use ear drops given to you i.e. ciprofloxacin drops, you may continue for one more week. Don't worry these drops doesn't have any significant side-effects in almost all cases. You can use it for one week more. After your consult new doctor,he/she will advise to continue or stop usage of these drops, and further investigations for trauma if needed.Till then take ample amount of rest, have healthy food and prescribed medicines.

Wish your husband rapid recovery!
