How Long Is The Healing Period For A Hairline Fracture Of The Tibia?

my 94 year old mother was moved from a carpeted floor in a nursing home to a tile floor and after one day she took a fall. We were told the X-RAY showed a hairline fracture of the tibia.

She has always been healthy. How long will this take to heal. They began physical therapy (no weight bearing on the leg).

Geriatrics Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your clinical history and query, my opinion is as follows:
1. At this age, it takes longer. Normally around 6-8 weeks is required.
2. Nutrition improvement with Vit D and calcium is necessary for healing to occur faster.
3. Immobility of leg is unnecessary. However, she needs to be mobile with help of walking stick and cast around legs. Maintain minimal mobility, as at this age, regaining mobility after prolonged rest is difficult.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
