How Long Is Dtap Adult Vaccination Valid?

I will be taking care of my new born grandson for about 5 days. He is my 6th. Do I really need the Dtap adult vaccination if I ve always taken care of my newborns(children and grandchildren) without any problem? Will I need to get this booster again if I am in a similar situation in a few years? How long is it valid?

The Pertussis portion of the DTaP vaccine is believed to provide protection for about 5 years maximum. At 3 years out, about 50% of people are no longer protected, however. The vaccine provides immunity against only specific strains of pertussis. You may choose to use the DTaP to lower your chances of contracting pertussis and transmitting it, but the best protection is to avoid contact with vulnerable individuals like newborns if you have any signs of a cold or cough. Wearing a surgical face mask, careful hand washing, and seeing your doctor right away if you think you've been infected by pertussis are all also important ways of limiting disease spread. You may also have natural immunity to pertussis, though it is difficult to know this for certain without blood testing, and the blood testing that is available may not be 100% accurate.
