Hi,

Herpes Zoster is a viral infection, which involves sensory nerves of body. It is very painful accompanied by blisters and vesicles. Blisters and vesicles heal generally with scab formation within 7-10 days with complete resolution of rashes within 2-4 weeks. However, pain and burning may persist for 1-3 months.

However, in some cases pain persist for a long time at the site of original rashes for a long period after even disappearance of rashes. This is a very common and most debilitating complication of herpes zoster and it may last for 6 months to one year or even longer than one year and even in few cases rest of life. Post herpetic neuralgia is more common in older people and in patients who did not take adequate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
