Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
if someone went to the hospital for liver fail because of acetaminophine over dose and following week the liver started to improve its been two weeks they are still in hospital how long will they be in the hospital or do they have to go through after care in the hospital
Acetaminophen toxicity has 4 phases as related to the time of intake of the medications. The 3rd or the hepatic phase occurs at around 3-4 days after ingestion where the patient will manifest with signs of liver damage like abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and a yellowish change in skin color.
Patients who are confirmed to have taken excessive doses of acetaminophen are usually given a medication/antidote in the name of N-acetylcysteine which helps decrease the toxic levels of acetaminophen and facilitate improvement.
In patients who then improve with the medication, the liver recovers at around the time when the symptoms resolve until 3-4 weeks from the time of ingestion. This improvement is the same as the 4th or recovery phase of the illness. And depending on the liver function tests and the patient's symptoms, planning of discharge can then be done as soon as the patient's clinical status improves and returns back to normal.
I assuming that this information helps you understand what happens in a patient who suffers from Acetaminophen toxicity.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
