How Long Does It Take To Recover After An Umbilical Hernia Surgery?

Dear Doctor, I am 34 years and have to undergo an umbilical hernia surgery. My concern is how soon can I resume my regular duties such as going to work, morning walks and move out as normal? Also, I drink and smoke cigarettes but not too much though. Is it ok to drink and smoke after surgery (after a few days or weeks) Please advise

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

Umbilical hernia repair, if uncomplicated usually has a quick recovery time.
You can go back to work in 5 days. Caution should be applied for 4-6 weeks:
-avoid climbing stairs,
-avoid lifting anything heavier than 3 kg,
-avoid strenuous activity.
-avoid jerky /sudden movements of the abdomen.

Gentle walking helps to recover from the surgery.
You should talk to your surgeon and go for follow ups to see if you are ready for your usual routine.

It is OK to drink on moderation after healing has completed (about 6-8 weeks).
Smoking must be stopped. It does interfere with healing and scar formations. It has been shown that those who smoke can have higher risk of adhesions after surgery.
Needless to say, smoking is injurious to over all health as well.
Hope I've answered your query.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health
