How Long Does It Take To Get Amniocentesis Test Result?

My OB doctor just informed us based on the Quad screen test that there is a 75-85% change that my unborn child has down syndrome. She also recommends that we have a amniocentesis test done. I am in my 19 week of pregnancy. How long does it take to get the result back?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

In aminocentesis, the cells in the sample of amniotic fluid are incubated and multiplied for up to 10 days under laboratory conditions. They are then examined under a microscope to look for the number of chromosomes and their appearance.

Results from a full karotype will usually be ready in two or three weeks time. In about one percent, the results might not be clear. This could be because the mother's blood has contaminated the sample of amniotic fluid, which may have prevented the cells from growing properly
