How Long Does It Take For Liver Enzymes To Become Normal?

I drank 3-4 glasses of wine almost every night this summer. I have just been diagnosed with diverticulitis. I am 56 year old female and the ER did a liver tests as routine procedure. My liver enzymes were 70 on one test and 49 on the other. I have stopped drinking now. Will my liver enzymes return to normal?

Hi there,
Thanks for using HCM.
Alcohol intake can elevate the liver enzyme levels. Usually the AST level is more increased than the ALT.
There are other causes as well for elevated liver enzymes like viral infections (Hepatitis B & C), autoimmune causes, metabolic causes and toxins and drugs.
All these causes should be ruled out in your case.

Yes you liver enzymes can return to normal.
If the elevated levels are only due to alcohol intake, then the enzymes would return to baseline levels in 3-6 months time after stopping alcohol.
