How Long Does Onglyza Take To Affect Blood Sugar Levels?

i understand the mechanism of action is to suppress immune response - does this render the patient immune compromised? How long does it take for Onglyza to effect blood sugar levels? Is there a link between dry eyes and hair loss with Onglyza? Like Metformin, does it aide in weight loss?

Diabetologist 's  Response
Dear sir/madam
i can understand your concern.
the medication onglyza is a type of DPP 4 inhibitor also called as saxagliptin.
Inhibitors of dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) represent a novel class of frequently used anti-diabetic drugs. In addition to its function in metabolic regulation, DPP-IV also plays a role in the immune system. Whether the DPP-IV inhibitors sitagliptin, vildagliptin or saxagliptin impair immune responses is, however, currently unknown.
until now studies are done to check for key point of immune modulation which are encouraging

Furthermore, proliferation of T cells and suppressive function of regulatory T cells was preserved. in may animal experiments crucial immunological parameters remain unaffected upon treatment with DPP-IV inhibitors, a fact that is reassuring with respect to safety of these drugs.

this drug is not associated with Dry eyes and hair loss.
this drug don't cause any weight loss or weight gain we can say ite weight neutral

General & Family Physician Dr. Shreya Kunder's  Response
Hello there,
The mechanism of action of Onglyza is not to suppress immune response. It actually aids in reducing blood sugars by increasing some hormones in the body that are responsible for reducing sugars. Thus no question of immunocompromised state. It also helps in weight loss by reducing appetite and thereby added advantage to reduce insulin resistance. It takes about 2-4 days for its effect to be seen and max benefit can be seen in a week's time. There is no link between dry eyes and hair loss with Onglyza that is known.
Hope that answers all your questions.
Take care.
