Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Friend had lesion removed from vocal cord yesterday. He was prescribed potent pain syrup...hydrocodine. he has a history of high blood pressure but had it down to average of 128/79. Today it s at 162/78. He is sleeping now in chair. When awake he seems wired. We decided to stop pain med. How long will it take for med. to leave his body so he can get back to normal?
Hydrocodeine is not normally associated with a change in blood pressure, if it does affect the blood pressure, it would normally cause a decrease not increase though persons can react differently to medication.
It would also cause drowsiness and fatigue. It is possible that the increase in blood pressure is related to his pain not the medication. Pain can cause blood pressure to increase.
You may want to consider speaking to his doctor to determine if the symptoms or signs are related to his medication or another cause prior to stopping the meds.
I hope this helps
