How Long Does Haloperidol Take To Manage Psychotic Behaviour?

My mom was prescribed naloperidol. How long do I expect to see some change in her attitude and wanting to go back to the past. She wants to go back to live in her own home which means she wouldnlibe alone. She get a extremely violent. I did have a health care provider who was doing a home visit film her pulling my hair and beating on me just in case she buried I would have evidence that it was in self defense. She is extremely strong when she gets into that mood and of course me doing every thing in my power not to hurt her. How do I handle having to repeatedly on a constant basis that her old house is not livable and she now lives with me.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It depends on the dosage. The dose is gradually increased to avoid side effects. Her basic function like sleep, self-care will improve first. Usually, by 7 to 10 days you will start seeing improvement. If there is no improvement consult your psychiatrist. You have to understand what she is doing is because of the illness. She has no touch with the reality and once she will improve with medication she will be fine. Being patient is the key here.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Rohit Kothari
