How Long Do Sulfa Drugs Remain In The System?

Hi, I have been taking a sulfa medication for a toe infection for 7 days now. I developed a severe sudden onset rash that has been spreading to my legs, arms, face, neck, chest, and abdomen since yesterday afternoon. I ve been applying ice to the area and have been trying to drink a lot of water to flush the sulfa out of my system. I took 2 tabs of zyrtec and one of benadryl before sleep last night but am not finding relief. What would you recommend I do and how long does it take to get sulfa out of your system (took last tab this morning---didn t think about the medication reaction until after I took it)?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

If you are allergic to sulhonamides (sulfa allergy), you should always inform the treating doctor so that you can be given some other medicine that suits you better.

Since you have to take sulfa medicine for 7(seven) days, the symptoms can get worse. You are suggested to visit ER & get admitted in the emergency ward.

Your symptoms are of anaphylaxis & need urgent medical attention. In the meantime take a nonsedating antihistamine, Levocetirizine, one sos to get relieved.

Your treating doctor will treat you with corticosteroids, antibiotics & intravenous immunoglobulins to halt/ reduce the progress of the rash.

Neglect may cause nausea, vomit, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, tightness of chest, etc.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
