Well, the paramedic had the closest answer, but still not completely correct. "Clogging" of the aorta takes years. The person eventually develops claudication (pain in the legs with walking due to not enough blood). However, by the time the aorta is completely closed off, the body often has created it's own bypasses (called 'collaterals). We see maybe half a dozen of these a year. If the patient is otherwise healthy, we usually clean out the blockage and do what's called an aorto-bifemoral bypass. If they're not healthy, we do an axillo-bifemoral bypass. In this, blood is routed from the axillary artery (in the armpit), down the side of the chest and into the legs.

My uncle has a blockage in the aorta in his stomach he was diagnosed with shingles until the did a cat scan and found this. You can actually feel it because it is swollen. Shouldn't he see a doctor in a special field.

hi there, i am asking on behalf of my 82 year old dad who has aneurysm in his aorta just slightly above the stomach. Anyhow, recently it has increased frm 4cm to 4.5cm within the last year. He is now very worried and is looking into supplements. He is looking into a LIve Well prodect called Mecomin which apparently contains vit B12 which can help. But i have also heard of 4LifeTransfer Factor Advance, and people say that it can also help. Is it safe for my dad to take it? Please advise, thank you

My mother who os 83 was told by her doctor Friday that she has a blocked aorta that can t be fixed with surgery. Said she would not make it of the operating table. She has a lot of health problems. He talked to us about a living will and said he wanted to get that in her folder soon. She had two MRIs a week apart. I was so upset I did not ask about a time line. In simple terms what should I be watching for? How long would you guess?
