How Long Can Pantoprazole Be Taken?

my general practitioner says taking Pantoprazole 40 MG every day for several years (been on it at least 2 years now) is no big deal. However, i have read where it is supposed to be for short term use only - 10 days. I also read that in Europe that it is only allowed for short term use. I have not had any issues with it that i know of and it really helps my acid reflux type symptoms. I am concerned about long term use. I am 64 and have low level osteoporosis, which the same doctor is well aware of and has had me take bone scans and check vitamin D and calcium with blood work. What do you think about the long term use, what if i stay on if for the rest of my life? thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Pantoprazole is an antacid belonging to the category of proton pump inhibitors. Intake of such medications for long-term could cause weakness in the bones due to osteoporosis. Also, it can have adverse effects on gastric mucosa resulting in gastric mucosal atrophy. Hence, its intake is better restricted to maximum of 10 days.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
