How Is Polycythemia Treated And Managed?

Hi, doc, for polycythemia, what medications can be used? Many, many years ago, my maternal grand mother was told she had polycythemia rubra vera and the treatment for her was therapeutic phlebotomy What eventually happened was she was put on supplemental oxygen, No more therapeutic phlebotomy. A friend of a friend was recently diagnosed with polycythemia. What s used these days?

Hello dear
Understand your concern.
Polycythemia is a neoplastic condition of RBC. WBC and platelets.
That produce excessive from the bone marrow.
Symptoms: May be asymptomatic, pruritus, rash, spleen and liver enlargement, arthritie, ulcer

Following are the treatment:
Main treatment is plebotomy is used : that reduce the blood volume and reduce the symptoms and severity
Chemotherapy: Hydroxyurea, erotinab and interferon can be used.
NSAIDS: Aspirin low dose can be used to reduce thrombosis
If not responsive to medicine:
Bone marrow suppression by radio isotope can be used.
