As your mother has been suffering from intestinal cancer for last 1.5 years therefore it might be in stage 3 or 4 cancer. In such a condition it is difficult to treat by surgery alone and often even if surgery is done then chemotherapy and radiation therapy are important. It is possible that surgery might have certain limitation due to age and local spread of disease. In this situation it is best to start chemotherapy to shrink the tumor and then give radiation to further limit the disease process. Please discuss in detail with the oncologist.
