How Do I Control My Friend’s Excessive Alcohol Drinking Which Has Turned His Eyes Yellow?

My friend has yellowing eyes and is very tired. He just told me he has been drinking heavily for a few weeks and has had problems in the past coming off alcohol. He wont let me take him to the hospital till in the morning. I bought some beers to make sure he does not have a seizure. What else can I do. Let him sleep, or keep him awake? He seems better now that he has had a couple drinks.

Hi,

That is bad. the course of alcoholic liver disease is quite unpredictable and varies so we make prognosis based on three very crude groupings (child categories) A: no discernable effect B: some effect and C: several serious effects with hospitalizations which the case sounds like. The third has about a 50% possibility of making it for 5 more years---this includes those stopping drinking.

Cannot say in your particular case, but certainly needs hospitalization and of course, hospitals have protocols to prevent the seizures that are far safer than the beers.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
