How Can Worsening Tinnitus In The Left Ear Of An Elderly Person Be Treated?

I am 76 years old. For the past couple months I have had ringing or humming in my left ear. It seems to be getting worse and now is effecting my sleep. I understand there are not any medicine that may fix this but it is getting annoying. I have been to an ENT dr. but she prescribed prednisone which really hasn t helped with this problem.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Sudden onset tinnitus in old age may be due to stroke or BPPV or Acute labyrinthitis or acute vestibular neurinitis or neuroma or age related or drugs side effects etc.
Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is.
Use water vapor inhalation and salt water gargling thrice a day.
Avoid tablet Cognix plus twice a day for five days.
If symptoms not improved please consult your ENT specialist he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
