How Can Whole Milk Be Introduced Into The Diet Plan Of A 1-year-old?

My son turned 1 today, he has been on breast milk (I do supplement with formula). I have broke him from the bottle and made the transition to a cup. Tomorrow I plan to introduce him to whole milk, I was wondering the best way to do this? I was planning on nursing him 1st thing in the morning and then giving him solids for breakfast like we always do. A snack between breakfast and lunch, give him a cup of whole milk with solids at lunch, another snack between lunch and dinner, a cup of milk and solids for dinner and then nurse him at bed. Is this ok or should I try something else for his first day!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

There are various ways to do this. I have found it to be effective when I tell my patient's parents to begin with breast milk only (which you are already doing), then gradually reduce the amount of breast milk as you gradually increase the amount of whole cow's milk. For example, say you pump your breasts to express 4 oz, then remove one oz and replace it with one oz of whole cow's milk.

After 1 to 2 days, mix 2 oz of breast milk with 2 oz of whole cow's milk. In another couple of days, you can move to 1 oz breast milk plus 3 oz whole cow's milk and then 4 oz whole cow's milk. Happy Birthday to your son and very good of you to have nursed your infant for 12 months.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Arnold Zedd
