How Can Vertigo Be Treated?

A week from this past Thursday, I went to a clinic with dizziness. The doctor told me I had benign vertigo. I was prescribed meclizine which I took for four days until the dizziness left. Tonight I feel the same dizziness returning. Should I see a doctor immediately or should I resume the meclizine?

Hello,
Thanks for trusting healthcaremagic!
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

The symptoms you have mentioned suggestive of vertigo.Since you had recurrence of symptoms despite taking the medicine you have to see the doctor again. You have to take the medicines for long term and it is better not to skip the medicines with out doctor's permission. It is not an emergency and you can take the remaining medicines and consult the doctor again.
If the symptoms persist despite medicines I suggest you to consult an ENT specialist and get the following things done:-
1.A detailed ENT examination and hearing assessment is necessary.
2.A neurological examination and CT scan may be needed in some cases.
3.Some clinical tests like Hallpike maneuver may be needed to malke a diagnosis of positional vertigo.
4.Routine blood investigations.
The management depend upon the cause of vertigo, most benign vertigos are treated by medical management and you may require long term use of drugs like "betahistine".In some rare cases surgical correction may be needed.
Try to avoid driving and operating heavy machinery.
Hope I have answered your query.
Wishing you good health.

Regards.
Dr.Shinas
