How Can Swelling In The Feet And Calves Be Treated?

My 78 year old mom with Hepatic Encephalopathy is currently on Xifaxan 550mg 2x day and experiencing extremely swollen feet, toes and calves. It looks like a water blister. The skin is thin and it looks like if I poked it with a needle that water would ooze out. She is 5 1 and weighs 108 lbs. What should we do? She has low salt diet and elevates her feet above her heart to help with the swelling.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
The liver disease that she has is causing the swelling. Her doctor may want to prescribe some medication and/or some compression stockings. You are doing the correct thing by having her prop her feet up and keeping her on a low salt diet. The rest needs to be evaluated and treated by a physician
