How Can Swelling And Pain In The Finger Joint Be Treated?

Right middle finger swollen in curved position painful and cannot straighten it .in this conditation after waking. Have had cortisone injections in both hands about 10 mos ago. What can I do tonight to reduce swelling and and pain and straighten finger? Thank you, Joyce horn age 86.

Hi, thanks for your question.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience you feel. You are most likely having osteoarthritis of the hand.

To reduce the pain tonight

1.You can apply ice twice or thrice, for 10 minutes each time.
2. Take over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen.
3. Apply analgesics ointment.

However, i would also suggest you book for physiotherapy through an orthopaedic surgeon. Physiotherapy would provide longterm relief of the pain and restore the shape and flexibility of the finger.

Also your orthopaedic surgeon may consider other treatment options such as joint replacement surgery.
