How Can Swelling And Inflammation On The Finger Be Treated?

Hi Doctor I had a Mallet middle finger injury on Feb. 12th. 2018. The x-ray are negative for broken bones. I have being using a splint 24/7 for 10 weeks. An orthopedic specialist examined the finger at that time and told me the finger is healing. However I have doubts that the tendon has not re-connected, here is why: - the finger is swollen and red, sensible on slight touch - bending of the finger is OK, but the top knuckle of the finger has no structural strength, the knuckle is like rubber - I cannot lock it in straight position My question is do I have a reason to believe the tendon is not re-connecting and if yes what is your recommendation? Thank you

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

If you are not able to extend finger tip there is likely possibility of mallet finger. Reason may be non healed extensor tendon at distal phalanx or avulsion injury of extensor tendon. Diagnosis can be confirmed by clinical Examination and 1. Xray of middle finger lateral view 2. Mri of the middle finger. Please get it done from radiology centre nearby you. Meanwhile wear mallet finger splint. Treatment depends on etiology and you need to consult Hand specialist with both reports.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
