Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mother is 88 and has sundowner s syndrome. What are some medications to help alleviate some of her anxiety. She takes remeron (15 mg) and lexapro (10 mg) both in the morning. She has also been prescribed Ativan (.25 mg) as needed in the afternoon. It seems she needs more in the afternoon and they don t want her to take the Ativan everyday. What would be another possible medication?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Sundown syndrome is characterized by the sudden appearance of neuropsychiatric symptoms such as agitation, confusion and anxiety in a chronologic fashion, usually during late afternoon or early evening, between 4pm and 6pm. It commonly affects institutionalized or cognitively impaired individuals, but may also affect elderly inpatients. She may take one more dose escitalopram under the guidance of your treating doctor. Neuro protective agents are useful, physical emotional support also useful.Ifymptoms not improved please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
