How Can Sun Burn On The Stomach Be Treated?

I ve got bad sunburn on my tummy and up my left hand side across the chest. I ve had it for 3 days, I m in quite a lot of discomfort and it chafes quite a bit. I m drinking plenty of fluids and having plenty of cold showers as well as applying natural yogurt on it. Is there anything else I can do? And do I need to have it looked at? It s turning from being red to purple in colour.I m taking painkillers to help with the pain.

Hi, thanks for your question. I am glad to help.

You have been employing the right strategies to resolve the sunburn, however, here are other tips to expedite resolution of the sunburn.

1. Apply a cold moist towel on the burn area for up to 15 minutes, several times daily.
2. After your cold shower, immediately apply a moisturizer. This helps trap water in the burn area.
3. Avoid creams containing petroleum and lidocaine as these may irritate the burn area further.
3. Do not rupture any blisters there might be.
4. Wear tight-woven cloth material to avoid sun exposure to the burn area.
5. Apply an antibiotic ointment to prevent infection of the affected skin area.

The purple discoloration of the burn area is related to the fragility of the blood vessels beneath the burn area, causing them to loose blood cells to the exterior. It is nothing to worry about.

If the burn area does not show signs of healing or resolution of symptoms in the next couple of days, you should review with a primary care doctor.

I hope i have answered your question.

Best wishes.
