How Can Split Finger Nails Be Treated?

I have a problem with my fingernails - I don t care what they look like, but they split way down into the quick and never seem to repair or get better. I do not polish my nails and I do keep my hands clean. Cannot understand why they always split so painfully so deep into the quick. Is there anything that can treat this. I am not concerned about growing them long, but every time I try to pick up something that has fibers in it, the tears in my nail catches and it is incredibly painful. Like my nail is being torn out. Advice please.

hi mam/sir,I can understand your distress.splitting of nails is seen in many diseases.let me mention the important causes:
1)psoriasis
2)severe anemia
3)diabetes mellitus
4)thyroid disorders
5)lung diseases like bronchiectasis,pleural effusion.
6)allergic contact dermatitis due to chemicals either at job or in nail removers, lacquers
7)repeated minor trauma to nail, fungal infections.
just check if any of the above mentioned conditions are causing your illness.you need to consult a GP if the following symptoms appear like:
1)when >1 nail is affected,painful,discolouration.
2)when nails are very brittle and associated with other skin symptoms.
3)presence of pus and swelling in nails.
hope my answer explains the importance of examination of nails by a dermatologist for an appropriate diagnosis and timely intervention thus preventing permanent damage to the nails.any other health queries, please let me know.thank you.take care.bye.
