How Can Sore Throat Be Treated?

I woke up this morning with a sore throat. Looking further I see my uvula is enlarged and it looks like I have cold sores on it. Should I see my doctor? Or let it run its course? I have several tabs of prednisone on hand for a recent allergic breakout in my eyes (40 10mg tabs). Will that help?

Hello,
Thanks for trusting Healthcaremaic!
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

As per your description it seems like pharyngitis(sore throat). It could be due to streptococcal infection in most cases. You don't need to worry as it can be cured effectively and complications are rare.

I suggest you to consult a general practitioner and get the following things done:-
1.A short course of antibiotics in necessary for five to seven days.
2.Acetaminophen or ibuprofen can b e used for fever and pain.
3.Do warm saline gargles or gargling with a chlorhexidine containing mouth wash.
4.Antihistamines like levocetrezine can be used for symptomatic relief.
Predinosolone is unnecessary for this condition and it can cause flare up of infection.
If symptoms persist despite all these a throat swab is needed.

Hope I have answered your query.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.
