How Can Sleeping Patterns Be Changed?

Everyday after school I always have to come home and take a nap from usually around 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm and I always stay up until about 3 am and have to wake up at 6 am. I have a feeling that this isn't normal at all, I'm only 17! What can I do to make this pattern stop!?

Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM! I appreciate your concern.

I would like to explain that there are different patterns of sleep, depending on our daily activity. This is because you are accustomed to do the same things every day.
But this is not a normal rhythm, which can cause several hormonal imbalances, mood disorders and a decrease in your everyday performance.

There are different tips to change this regime:
-You can try to perform some physical activity around 3.30. Caffeine would also be helpful to postpone your sleeping for later.
-Try to sleep at the same time every night (for example 22.30). It is important to lay down with closed eyes, even if you don't sleep. You can try to read a book before going to sleep.
- Avoid staying before the computer until late.

If you do this for at least 10 days, your routine will start to change.

I would also recommend you to start melatonine for some days, 30 minutes before sleep every night. This will help to regulate your physiological sleep-wake cycle.

Hope to have been helpful!

Greetings! Dr. Aida

Dear
Welcome to HCM
We understand your concerns

I went through your details. For sure, the present sleeping pattern is not at all good for your health. You are actually sleeping when you are supposed to be awake, active physically and play games. You are awake while you are supposed to sleep.

Sleeping pattern is a habit. You can change any habit by force. In your case, you should force change your habit for a week and automatically new habit takes shape. I suggest this. After coming back home, immediately, go outside. Don't sit at home. Find a play ground and friends. Play for 2 hours. Com back home. Engage in studies and leisure. You may feel sleepy. Force yourself not to sleep. You will see a change in habit within two days.

Hope this answers your query. Further clarifications are welcome.
Good luck. Take care.
