How Can Sinusitis And Constant Cough Be Treated?

My 54 year old wife has had a sinus infection and/or allergy symptoms for about 8 weeks. Runny nose, clogged nasal passages, and a constant cough from the drainage. She is asthmatic and does suffer from allergies, but this just won't stop. The coughing is wearing her down and making her depressed. She sees a doctor for allergies and another for asthma, but all of steroids and antibiotics have not helped. She's at her wits end with this. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I have gone through your short description and I can understand your concerns.

The symptoms you have described suggest that your wife is having chronic sinusitis along with exacerbation of asthma.
I suggest you to consult an ENT specialist and get the following things done:-
1.A short course of antibiotic therapy for five to seven days, preferably levofloxacin or amoxclav.
2.Take a chest X-ray to rule out lung conditions like pneumonia.
3.if she has pain or fever antipyretics like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be tried.
4.Expectorant cough syrup can be tried to clear mucus and secretions.
5.Do warm saline gargles.
6.Steam inhalation and nasal decongestants would provide symptomatic relief.
7.Do nasal irrigation using saline nasal drops.
8.Antihistamines like levocetrezine would provide symptomatic relief from allergy.
9.In case of breathing difficulty she can go for nebulizations with bronchodialator drugs and oxygen supplementation.
If the symptoms persist despite all these, a CT scan may be needed to look for the severity of sinus infection. In severe cases surgical intervention may be needed to correct the sinusitis. Nowadays endoscopic sinus surgery is the preferred and best treatment option.
