How Can Shingles Be Prevented Be During Pregnancy?

My daughter-in-law is 7 months pregnant and I just found out a family member has been diagnosed with shingles. We plan to be together over the holidays and want to know if there is a risk. The person with shingles has had the vaccine, has been placed on medication, and has a facial rash with some eye swelling, but no blisters. I also have 2 grandchildren, aged 2 and 3, but need to check if they have been vaccinated.

Hello,

See, shingle is a little bit difficult to manage with pregnancy. The fetus is in the risk of infection for that you need to consult once your gynecologist about it.

As far your children are concerned, yes they are at risk of developing an infection, if they are not vaccinated or had shingles before. If they had an infection before then it will not happen again for sure, but make sure vaccination is done.

All the family members are at risk, if they are not vaccinated or did not have shingles before in lifetime, so get vaccinated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Archana
