How Can Severely Itchy Red Bumps On The Scalp Be Treated?

My scalp has been itching for a month now. At first it was a tingling sensation and then it got worse. I ve determined that it s not my shampoo. I m afraid if I keep scratching it, it ll get infected. I keep checking around my neck and ears for eggs or bugs or flakes, but all I see are red bumps. I m about to go visit my brother and he has young kids. I don t want to pass anything on to them.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You have symptoms of itching on the scalp which seems to be due to folliculitis that is hair follicle infection caused by Staphylococcus bacteria. It can also be due to an allergic reaction, contact dermatitis or scalp psoriasis.

I would suggest you consult a dermatologist and get evaluated. The physician can do a clinical evaluation along with investigations to rule out for the exact cause. In the case of folliculitis, topical antibacterial ointments and oral antibiotics can help.

Maintain proper hygiene and avoid itching scalp with any sharp object. In case of allergic reaction avoiding using the particular cosmetics and steroid lotion can help. Wash hair twice a week with anti-fungal shampoo.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
