How Can Severe Rheumatoid Arthritis Be Treated?

I suffer from severe R.A. for many years. My general practitioner used to prescribe Oxycodone. However, she now says I must get this prescription from a rheumatologist. I am 72 yrs old and have chronic pain almost every day. My R.A. flairs up unexpectantly & causes me great pain & discomfort. Do rheumatologists prescribe Oxycodone or other opioids? I know about the news re: addiction to pain killers but these make the difference for me of whether or not I get out of bed in the mornings.

hi sir/madam,

Severe rheumatoid arthritis can be easily treated by the Ayurveda.

Let me advice you about this type of arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a complex and chronic disease, involving many systems. In Ayurvedic treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, diet advice is as important as Panchakarma therapy and the Ayurvedic medicines. Since Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease (long-standing), the dietary restrictions are to be observed for a long period of time as well.

Before going for the treatment as a ayurvedic doctor i would suggest some diets plans which will help in-
1.Avoid worsening of joint pain, stiffness and swelling
2.Avoid worsening of gastro – intestinal health.
3.Avoid ‘Ama’ formation – a state of impaired digestion and metabolism, which is the main cause for Rheumatoid arthritis, according to Ayurveda.
4.Avoid imbalance of Kapha and Vata, which in turn worsen stiffening, pain and inflammation.

Avoid these food habits:-
1.Curds.
2.fish.
3.Jaggery.
4.Contaminated water, cold water, frozen food stuff.
5.Avoiding natural urges.
6.Skipping night sleep.
7. Black gram.
8. Oil massage – Ayurveda is not all about pouring oils and rubbing on body. In Rheumatoid arthritis, oil massage is not advised.

What all things can be added to diet:-
1.Barley.
2. Red rice.
3.Bitter gourd.
4.Ginger.
5.Garlic processed in buttermilk.
6.Water processed with Panchakola churna.

I will prescribe some ayurvedic medines which will give you excellent results.
1.Panchasama chooran:– This powder should be taken in a dose of 3-5 grams mixed in hot water half an hour after food, twice daily or at bedtime.

2.Simhanada Guggulu:- 1-0-1 after food with water.

3.Rasnasaptakam Kashayam:- 10 to 30 ml with equal quqntity of water.

4.Panchakola chooran:- 1tsp powder mixed with hot water before or after food.

follow the diet and take medicine on proper time.
hope i was helpful.

General & Family Physician Dr. Wasim Murtaza's  Response
Hi thank you for querry,
Outcome in RA is compromised when diagnosis and treatment are delayed. The clinical course of RA is generally one of exacerbations and remissions. Approximately 40% of patients with this disease become disabled after 10 years, but outcomes are highly variable.
Many nonpharmacologic treatments are available for this disease, including exercise, diet, massage, counseling, stress reduction, physical therapy, and surgery.
Medication-based therapies comprise several classes of agents, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), nonbiologic and biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), immunosuppressants, and corticosteroids.
Do its better to consult Rheumatologist ASAP to prevent disabilities.
Hope the answer will give you information .
wish you a good health.
