How Can Severe Hot Flashes Be Treated?

I had my uterus removed when I was 30 years old. At age 40, I started going through extreme hot flashes. My Doctor prescribed Estradiol, 2mg. I have been taking it for 43 years. I am now 73. I stopped 2 months ago, and going through extreme hot flashes now, about 15 a day. Should I start the Estradiol again. This is a nightmare. My Mom went through the same thing till she died at the age of 78. Please help~

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
I understand your concern.

Hot flushes in your case may be because of stopping of drug estradiol making menopausal symptoms getting flared up.
Also you need to get tested for blood thyroid hormone levels as their alteration may cause hot flushes.

You may try slowly adapting your body without the external hormone supplementation by,
-Maintain adequate hydration by minimum8-10 glasses of water.
-Avoid alcohol, hot spicy food, caffeinated drinks.Increase intake of fruits and vegetables.
-Wear light loose clothing.Always stay in cool and well ventilated environment.
-Practice regular yoga and meditation for destressing your mind.

If symptoms persist beyond 7 days, consult with gynecologist for hormone therapy.

Hope this information helps.
Wish you good health.
