How Can Rheumatoid Arthritis In The Hands Be Treated?

Hi, i have rheumatoid arthritis in both hands/wrists, and i m experiencing numbness and pain, along with a severely reduced ability to grasp and keep hold of things. Closing my hands, especially my dominant right hand causes muscle cramps and a lot of pain. Generally, when I wake up, I cannot feel my hands at all, and am sometimes unable to eat for hours because I cannot use my hands. What can I do to correct this?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You need to be started on DMARD's as, the stiff joints are causing nerve compression. Discuss with your doctor about starting you on Methotrexate regimen along with Hydroxychloroquine. I would also recommend a single cortisone shot if your doctor permits.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
