How Can Restless Legs Syndrome Be Treated?

Hello. I am a 66 year-old male. I have narcolepsy and take amphetamine salts for it. I also take levothyroxine for my thyroid adjustment. For about a year I ve been taking ropinirole for restless legs syndrome. I normally sleep very well, but for the last three nights, my legs have been keeping me awake for hours. i am not getting sufficient rest. It s like my legs have had a of caffeine! I am drinking plenty of water, avoiding caffeine after breakfast, and not consuming very much sugar. I take a men multiple vitamin and eat healthy meals. I ve tried a hot bath before bedtime, soap in the bedsheets, and also have taken Emergen-Zees as a sleep aid. Nothing seems to be helping. I have a doctor s appt. in the next few days, but in the meantime I CAN T SLEEP! any suggestions?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You are already taking dopamine agonists (ropinirole). To rule out any co-exisent iron deficiency anemia.Opioids, benzodiazepines, pregabalin, and gabapentin may also be of therapeutic value. You can try any of these drug particualrly opiod (Tramadol)for immediate symptomatic relief of the problem.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
